You called, Mama
What it's about
This manner is about coming when called and answering gently, the everyday side of being good to parents. This week, notice it and say thank you each time your child comes the first time: being noticed helps a habit grow. If your child lives with grandparents or a guardian, use their names in the story.
What Allah says
Thy Lord hath decreed that ye worship none but Him, and that ye be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in thy life, say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel them, but address them in terms of honour.
Allah tells us to be good to our parents and to speak to them kindly. Coming when they call, with a gentle word, is one way to do it.
A hadith is waiting for the asatizah to confirm the reference and grading before it is shown here.
Things to talk about
- How do you think Mama felt when Umar came the first time she called?
- You are building with blocks. Abah asks you to help carry the groceries in. What would you do?
- Mama says it's time to switch off the tablet. What would you do?
- Nenek asks you to bring her glasses from the table. What would you do?
- Allah asks us to be good to our parents and to speak to them gently, without even an “uff”. What could Umar say instead of “uff”?
Every family is different
Every family is different. Some children live with one parent, with grandparents, with a step-parent or with a guardian. Whoever cares for your child, the same love and good manners apply: change “Mama” and “Abah” in the stories to the people in your child's life.
